Stocks trading well above the previous day’s close before the regular session opens at 9:30 AM ET, often because of news, earnings or an SEC filing overnight.
When does pre-market trading start?
Most brokers allow trading from 4:00 AM ET, and the pre-market session runs until the 9:30 AM ET open. Liquidity is lower than in regular hours, so spreads are wider.
Do pre-market gains hold after the open?
Not always. Some gaps keep running, others fade back toward the previous close. Volume, float and the news behind the move all matter; the gap guide explains what to look at.
